Journalism work history
of Rich Smith
• 1999-2011. Freelance writer.
Many hundreds of news-and-feature articles and blog posts written on an array of topics, 95% of the time at the invitation of editors. Periodicals have included: New You Magazine (consumer-national), Chiropractic Economics (trade), and Harvey Mudd College Magazine (institutional).
• 2008-2011. ImagingBiz. Writer.
Produced to date for this online-and-print news organization more than 90 feature articles exploring issues of critical concern to radiologists and business managers who own, operate or are employed by diagnostic imaging enterprises. My contributions – characterized by can't-get-anywhere-else insights wrapped in compelling style – helped ImagingBiz steadily increase visitor volume and put more eyes on the page for longer times. Each story ranged in length from 1,000 to 2,500 words and covered topics such as industry best-practices, equipment innovation, emerging opportunities for growth, and dangers that lay ahead. My editors received more than a few kind notes from readers – and advertisers – wishing to express appreciation for the accuracy, depth, insightfulness, and readability of my work.
• 2000-2006. HME Today Magazine. Writer. Produced feature articles at a rate of two per month for this print B2B magazine (later, with an online presence) catering to operators of home healthcare companies. Very similar to my work with ImagingBiz – and with very similar success. HME Today was one of several magazines published by the same house, and as such my services were often requested by the editors of those periodicals, which included Rehab Management, Plastic Surgery Practice, Sleep Review, and Decisions in Imaging Economics. I was a favorite among these editors in part because of my eager willingness to accept the assignments no one else wanted, whether owing to the unattractiveness of the assignment or the obscenely tight deadline involved or both.
• 1999-2000. The Rake Report. Writer.
Conducted interviews and developed stories about orthopedic medicine/technologies/trends for this print-only monthly strategic-advisory newsletter published on behalf of accounting giant Pricewaterhouse-Coopers. Unearthed important scoops on pending new legislation that would adversely impact orthopedic physician practices, the newsletter's target audience.
